South Africa are 1-0 up in the three-match series

India was defeated by South Africa by 31 runs

South Africa took a 1-0 lead in the ODI series after defeating India by 31 runs in the first ODI. India’s inexperienced middle-order was not up to the task. Temba Bavuma’s 110 off 143 balls and Rassie van der Dussen’s undefeated 129 off 96 balls helped South Africa rally from 68 for three to close to 296 for four. For the fourth wicket, the pair accumulated 204 runs. The wicket-takers for India were Jasprit Bumrah (2/48) and Ravichandran Ashwin (1/53).

India had a strong start in their pursuit of South Africa’s 297 runs, but captain KL Rahul (12) was dismissed against the flow of play. Virat Kohli looked in terrific form, scoring his 63rd FIFTY before succumbing to Tabraiz Shamsi’s bowling at midwicket. Shikhar Dhawan scored a superb 79 to keep India on track in the chase, and the partnership added 92 runs, but Rishabh Pant and Shreyas Iyer quickly joined Kohli and Dhawan to the dressing room, leaving India in shambles. Debutant Venkatesh didn’t cause much issue for the scorers as India finished their 50 overs 31 runs short of the hosts. Shardul Thakur finished on 50, which was more of a consolation than anything else.

Temba Bavuma (110) and Rassie van der Dussen (129*) put together South Africa’s second-highest partnership (204) against India earlier in the day, helping the hosts reach 296 for 4 at the end of their innings. With 2 for 48, Bumrah was India’s best bowler. South Africa 296/4, India 265/8 (50).

Virat Kohli surpasses Sachin Tendulkar record

In his debut ODI innings in 2022, Kohli made 51 runs and formed a key 92-run partnership in India’s 297-run chase. Kohli only needed nine runs to surpass Tendulkar’s total, which he achieved in style. Sachin Tendulkar scored 5065 runs in 147 innings, while Virat Kohli batted 104 innings and averaged 58, compared to Tendulkar’s 37. In the list of Indians with the most ODI runs overseas, Kohli is followed by MS Dhoni (4520 runs in 124 innings), Rahul Dravid (3998 runs in 110 innings), and Sourav Ganguly (3468 runs in 105 innings).

Kohli has 1287 runs against South Africa in ODIs, making him the eighth best run scorer against them. In 27 matches against the Proteas, he has four hundred and six fifties at an average of 64.35.
