IMD warns of heavy rain; 'Orange' Alert for Andhra Pradesh

Heavy rainfall expected across several States; IMD issues 'Orange' Alert for Andhra Pradesh districts

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert for several districts in Andhra Pradesh due to heavy rainfall expected over the next two days. This alert includes Eluru, Alluri Sitaramaraju, Parvatipuram Manyam, Srikakulam, Vizianagaram, West Godavari, East Godavari, NTR, and Krishna. The warning indicates that these areas may experience heavy to very heavy rains, with extremely heavy downpours expected particularly in Eluru, ASR, East Godavari, West Godavari, and NTR.

The rainfall is linked to a low-pressure system over the northwest Bay of Bengal, which is expected to intensify into a depression near the coasts of West Bengal, Odisha, and Bangladesh by September 9. The cyclonic circulation associated with this system is extending up to 7.6 km above sea level and is likely to move northwards before shifting west-northwestwards across Gangetic West Bengal, north Odisha, Jharkhand, and north Chhattisgarh over the next few days.

Rainfall across India

Similar heavy rainfall conditions are expected in Telangana, with heavy to very heavy rains forecasted over the weekend. The monsoon trough is currently south of its normal position, contributing to increased rainfall in various regions.

Western India will see widespread light to moderate rainfall throughout the week. Areas like Madhya Maharashtra and Vidarbha are on alert for very heavy rainfall on specific days. Central India, including Madhya Pradesh, will experience isolated heavy rainfall, while Gujarat and Konkan regions may face heavy downpours.

Odisha is likely to receive very heavy rainfall from September 8 to 10. Northeastern states like Assam, Meghalaya, and Tripura will see moderate to heavy rains, while northwest India, including Rajasthan, Haryana, and Uttar Pradesh, will experience scattered light to moderate rainfall over the coming days.
