Assam to mark May 13 against superstition

Assam Government declares May 13 as 'Day against superstitious beliefs'

The Assam government has decided to observe May 13 as the "Day Against Superstitious Beliefs." This initiative aims to raise awareness about the negative effects of superstitions on society. A notification issued by Governor Laxman Prasad Acharya highlights the need to promote scientific thinking, rationality, and informed decision-making across the state.

Honoring a social activist

May 13 was chosen for this observance in honor of Padma Shri awardee Birubal Rabha. The well-known social activist, who passed away on this day in 2024, worked tirelessly to eliminate witch-hunting practices in Assam. This initiative seeks to continue his efforts by educating people about the harmful impact of superstitions and advocating for logical thinking.

Activities planned for the day

Several government departments will participate in this initiative. The School and Higher Education departments will organize events in schools and colleges, focusing on the importance of scientific reasoning. Health and Family Welfare will use mass media to spread knowledge about health-related superstitions and their consequences.

The Panchayat and Rural Development department will arrange special gram sabhas across villages, particularly in areas affected by witch-hunting. Experts like doctors, educators, and social workers will be invited to discuss the dangers of superstition. Similarly, the Women and Child Development department, along with NGOs and community groups, will hold awareness campaigns.

The Science and Technology department will conduct outreach activities through its network, and Aryabhatta Science Centres in 219 blocks will actively participate in spreading the message. Other departments will also contribute by conducting activities relevant to their fields.

By uniting various sectors and communities, Assam aims to create a more informed and rational society. This annual event is expected to make a lasting impact in reducing superstitious beliefs and harmful practices in the state.
