PM Modi likely to visit US in February: Trump
Donald Trump reveals PM Narendra Modi may visit the US in February
US President Donald Trump has said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi is likely to visit Washington in February. Speaking aboard Air Force One on Monday, Trump mentioned that he had a phone conversation with Modi earlier in the day and hinted at their upcoming meeting. While the Indian government has not confirmed the visit, there is speculation in diplomatic circles in New Delhi about plans for an early meeting between the two leaders.
Focus on strategic and trade ties
The White House issued a statement describing Trump’s phone call with Modi as “productive.” The two leaders reportedly discussed various topics, including advancing cooperation in trade, technology, and defense. Trump emphasized the importance of India increasing its purchase of American-made security equipment and ensuring a balanced trade relationship. Modi and Trump also spoke about working together for global peace and security.
In addition, they discussed regional issues related to security in the Indo-Pacific, the Middle East, and Europe. Both leaders highlighted their commitment to strengthening the India-US strategic partnership and the Quad alliance, which includes India, the US, Japan, and Australia.

The United States is India’s largest trading partner, with bilateral trade in goods surpassing $118 billion in 2023-24. India posted a $32 billion trade surplus during this period. As part of efforts to improve ties with the Trump administration, India is exploring options to increase imports from the US, such as oil and gas.
The defense relationship between the two nations has also grown significantly. The US has supplied advanced defense equipment to India, including helicopters, aircraft, and weapons. A recent $4 billion deal will allow India to acquire 31 MQ-9B drones, further boosting its defense capabilities.
Trump acknowledged the strong relationship between India and the US, but he has also been critical of trade policies in the past. He described India as a “big abuser” on trade and has raised concerns about tariffs. Despite these differences, the two nations continue to strengthen their partnership through mutual agreements and dialogues.
If Modi’s visit happens, it will be another milestone in the deepening ties between the two countries, focusing on economic growth, security, and global cooperation.
