Inhaling deadly smoke from 'angithi' killed a woman and four children in Delhi

Neighbors discovered a 33-year-old woman and her four children dead. They may have inhaled harmful vapors from the fireplace in their chamber, according to an initial report.

The bodies have been sent to post mortem for further investigation, "Bodies of a woman and her four children were found inside their house in Shahdara's Seemapuri area; postmortem of bodies underway to ascertain the cause of death."

At around 1.30 p.m., a PCR call was received about four to five people lying unconscious in a room on the fifth story of a house in Old Seemapuri, says sources.

The mother and three of her children were discovered dead when officers arrived, while the fourth and youngest child was brought to a hospital but later certified dead by doctors, according to a senior police official.

During the investigation, it was discovered that Mohit Kalia (35) lived in the rented accommodation with his wife Radha and four children — two daughters and two sons, he added.

According to Deputy Commissioner of Police (Shahdara) R Sathiyasundaram, the flat belongs to Amarpal Singh (60), a resident of Shalimar Garden. According to authorities, preliminary investigations indicate that they all died of suffocation as a result of the stove being maintained inside the room owing to the extreme cold, as the small space had no ventilation.

They stated that the true cause of death can only be determined after a post-mortem examination.
