Italy is hosting the Group of Seven (G7) summit in Borgo Egnazia, following recent European Parliament elections that saw far-right gains in France and Germany. Italian Premier Giorgia Meloni, who leads a far-right party but maintains centrist foreign policies, opened the summit. The main topics include global conflicts, artificial intelligence, Africa, migration, climate change, and China.
Key highlights
Support for Ukraine
Italian Premier Giorgia Meloni announced a $50 billion loan to Ukraine, backed by profits from frozen Russian assets. U.S. President Joe Biden and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy signed a security agreement, emphasizing unity against Russia. German Chancellor Olaf Scholz and European Council President Ursula von der Leyen praised the strong commitment to Ukraine.

Meanwhile, Ukraine and Japan signed a 10-year agreement for security, defense, and humanitarian aid. British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak announced $310 million in nonmilitary aid to Ukraine. Leaders also focused on the Middle East, migration, and Africa, with Pope Francis scheduled to address the summit and meet several world leaders.
The G7 summit, held in a luxury resort styled like a medieval town, aims to address these critical issues and foster global cooperation.
