JK Rowling slams Olympics for Boxer decision

JK Rowling and ex-champions criticize Olympics over controversial decision on Boxers

JK Rowling has called on the International Olympic Committee (IOC) to reverse its decision to allow two boxers, Lin Yu-ting from Taiwan and Imane Khelif from Algeria, to compete in the Paris Olympics. Both athletes were disqualified from last year’s world championships after failing gender eligibility tests. Despite this, they are set to begin their Olympic matches later this week.

Controversial decision

After DNA testing at the world championships in Uzbekistan in 2023, it was found that both boxers had XY chromosomes, leading to their disqualification to ensure fairness. However, the IOC has chosen to ignore the International Boxing Association's (IBA) ruling on this issue. The responsibility for implementing rules at the Paris Olympics falls under the Paris 2024 Boxing Unit of the IOC.

Rowling has expressed strong disapproval of the IOC’s decision, asking what it will take to end what she views as an unfair situation. She criticized the organizers for allowing the boxers to compete, suggesting that it could lead to serious harm or even death of female athletes.

Additional reactions

Former world boxing champion Barry McGuigan and another ex-champion, Ebanie Bridges, also condemned the IOC’s decision. McGuigan called it shocking that the boxers were allowed to participate, while Bridges described it as a “sickening” choice. Their reactions reflect ongoing controversy and concerns over the fairness and safety of the Olympic competition.
