Judges should think of the language they are using: Kiren Rijiju

"In a democracy, everyone has the right to criticize but keep the language in mind. The court can criticise the Election Commission but the judges should also think about the language being used to criticise," on National Voter's Day, Kiren Rijiju, Union Minister of Law and Justice.

On Thursday, law minister Kiren Rijiju urged that judges go out into the fields and issue decisions at people's homes.

“I have told the CJI that it is not necessary to give judgments from the courtrooms only, but judges can go to the fields and give justice at the doorstep of people,” Rijiju says.

He went on to say that the reach of justice should be expanded, not limited by the confines of courtrooms.

Rijiju said it's time to get out of "our comfort zone" and break free from limitations, referring to the country's size and variety.

“We are such a big country, no one has experienced what we have gone through, the difficulties we face, and the problems in reaching out to people,” he said. “Our government is open to all kinds of suggestions,” he further added.

The minister said, “...there is no question of any compromise on the spirit of the Constitution. Nobody can play with the basic features of the Constitution or even think of changing it.” His remarks came in reference to “a certain section creating a debate that the government is trying to tamper with the basic structure of the Constitution”.

He continued, "It's a useless exercise of some undesirable elements generating questions in people's minds."

In collaboration with NALSAR University in Hyderabad, the law ministry has created a certificate course on the Constitution. Rijiju stated that the government is working on numerous programmes involving the law minister, the Chief Justice of India (CJI), and Supreme Court judges.
