Kashmir Capital clashes amid strike
Clashes erupt in Pakistan-Occupied Kashmir Capital smid total strike
Protests erupted in several towns across Pakistan-Occupied Kashmir (PoK), including Samahni, Sehansa, Mirpur, Rawalakot, Khuiratta, Tattapani, and Hattian Bala. The demonstrations were in response to a police crackdown in Muzaffarabad, the capital of PoK, prompting a strike called by the Jammu Kashmir Joint Awami Action Committee (JKJAAC).
Strike impact:
The strike, which aimed to shut down businesses and disrupt normal life, paralyzed Muzaffarabad as shops remained closed and roads were deserted due to a call from the JKJAAC. The situation escalated when police resorted to teargas shelling in response to stone-pelting by demonstrators, causing distress to residents in homes and mosques.
The JKJAAC had organized the strike after several of its leaders and activists were arrested in overnight raids by the police. The committee has been leading a movement against what they perceive as unjust taxes on electricity bills. They demand that electricity prices should be based on the production cost of hydro-power in the region, rather than excessive taxes imposed by authorities.

Government response:
In anticipation of the strike, the PoK government enforced Section 144 across the region and declared holidays in educational institutions. Despite these measures, thousands of people took to the streets across PoK. The Chief Secretary of PoK had also requested additional security forces to maintain law and order during the strike period.
Previously, the JKJAAC had reached an understanding with a reconciliation committee, resulting in a government notification in February. However, the committee announced the May 11 long march after accusing the government of failing to fulfill its commitments. The protests reflect growing discontent among the population over perceived injustices and unmet demands.
The strike disrupted daily life in Muzaffarabad division, with businesses, banks, and transportation services affected. The tense situation underscores the ongoing challenges faced by residents in PoK and the need for meaningful dialogue and resolution of grievances between the government and protest organizers.
