Key Appointments in UIDAI Leadership: Neelkanth Mishra Takes the Helm
Neelkanth Mishra, an experienced economist with a background in finance, has been appointed as the part-time chairman of the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI). This appointment signifies a significant development in India's government and financial sectors. Additionally, Nilesh Shah and Prof Mausam have been named as part-time members of UIDAI.
Who is Neelkanth Mishra?
Neelkanth Mishra, formerly associated with Credit Suisse, has become a prominent figure at Axis Bank, where he brings more than two decades of financial expertise. During his tenure at Credit Suisse, Mishra held various significant roles, such as Co-head of APAC Strategy, India Equity Strategy Head, and Head of Research for India. He displayed a specialized focus on diverse sectors, including metals and mining, Indian pharmaceuticals, Taiwan IC design, semiconductor foundries, and Asian tech strategy research.

Mishra's reputation stems from his unique insights into economic policies and market strategies. He has also played advisory roles in various government committees and contributed significantly as a member of the economic advisory council to the 15th finance commission. One of his notable contributions was identifying the "K-shaped" recovery dynamics during the pandemic, highlighting how the consumption downturn primarily affected individuals with substantial disposable income.
UIDAI Board Structure
The UIDAI board is the governing body responsible for overseeing the Unique Identification Authority of India. It consists of key members who play vital roles in the functioning of UIDAI. The board structure includes a chairperson, two part-time members, and the CEO, who also serves as the Member-Secretary within the Authority.

Until recently, senior IAS officer Amit Agrawal held the position of UIDAI CEO, and he was the sole board member in the organization. However, the recent appointments of Neelkanth Mishra, Nilesh Shah, and Prof Mausam will fill the previously vacant positions within the UIDAI board. This development is expected to strengthen the governance and leadership of UIDAI, which is responsible for the Aadhaar program, a critical initiative in India's digital identity ecosystem.
