Landslides force relocation of families in Uttarakhand

Landslides force relocation of families in Uttarakhand's Pagnau village

In Uttarakhand's Joshimath region, frequent landslides have prompted the decision to relocate 38 families from Pagnau village to safer areas. This move adds to the growing number of people displaced by natural disasters in the hill state. A team comprising officials from the Chamoli district administration and experts visited the affected area and recommended the relocation of households situated perilously close to the hillsides.

The need for relocation

Continuous landslides have been plaguing Pagnau village, posing a serious threat to the residents and their homes. A significant incident occurred recently when a massive landslide damaged three houses. The sub-divisional magistrate of Joshimath, Kumkum Joshi, expressed concern over the situation and stated that 38 families currently live in the affected zone.

Assessment and permanent arrangements

Authorities are in the process of assessing the cost of the houses and land belonging to the affected families. It's anticipated that the number of households in need of relocation may increase. The initial plan is to shift them temporarily to safer areas while permanent arrangements are made to ensure their safety and well-being.

Additional challenges in the region

The problems extend beyond Pagnau village, as residents of Kaunja village in Chamoli district are also seeking relocation to safer places. The region has experienced significant damage to agricultural fields and houses due to falling boulders during rain. These hazardous conditions have made the village no longer suitable for habitation.
