Lata Mangeshkar remains in the ICU but improving
Lata Mangeshkar's condition is improving, although she remains in the intensive care unit, according to her doctor. The 92-year-old singer was hospitalized to the Breach Candy Hospital's Intensive Care Unit (ICU) on January 8 after testing positive for coronavirus with mild symptoms.
Dr. Pratit Samdani, an associate professor at the Breach Candy Hospital, gave PTI an update on her health "She is showing signs of improvement. She is in the ICU. It is difficult to say for how many days she will be in the hospital" A close friend of the family, Anusha Srinivsan Iyer, also confirmed that the veteran vocalist is in good health.
In a statement, Iyer said, "Lata Didi is showing signs of improvement from before and is under treatment in the ICU from the amazing team of doctors spearheaded by Dr. Pratit Samdani. We are looking forward and praying for her speedy healing and coming back home."
On Friday, social media began to spread rumours that Mangeshkar's health had deteriorated. Iyer has shot down the rumours, saying, "A sincere appeal. Please do not give wind to any false news...The family and the doctors need their space. Let us pray for Lata Didi's speedy recovery and return home."
Mangeshkar, who began her career at the age of 13 in 1942 and has over 30,000 songs to her credit in many Indian languages, is regarded as one of Indian cinema's best singers.
She has performed several notable songs throughout the course of her seven-decade career, including Ajeeb Dastan Hai Ye, Pyar Kiya To Darna Kya, Neela Asman So Gaya, and Tere Liye, among others.
The singer, dubbed "India's Melody Queen," has received various prizes and honours, including the Padma Bhushan, Padma Vibhushan, and Dada Saheb Phalke Award, as well as multiple National Film Awards.
She has also been awarded India's highest civilian honour, the Bharat Ratna.
Several rumours about Lata Mangeshkar's health have been circulating since she was admitted to the hospital. Lata Mangeshkar's fans were relieved when she made yet another statement a few days ago. The statement stated that the singing maestro was in good health and that fake updates should be avoided.
The statement reads, “It is disturbing to see false news being circulated. Please note that Lata didi is stable. Continues to be in ICU under treatment of able doctors. Please pray for her quick return home.”
After being diagnosed with COVID-19 and pneumonia, the Bharat Ratna recipient was confined to Breach Candy Hospital in Mumbai for more than a week.
Mangeshkar showed signs of progress on January 18, 2022, and was claimed to be off the ventilator. "Lata Mangeshkar has started having solid food from the last couple of days and is showing improvement. She is responsive and doing better. She is not on ventilator,” says the reports.
Dr. Pratit Samdani, who is treating the 92-year-old singer, previously stated, "Lata Ji is still in ICU, and we are trying our best to guarantee she recovers quickly."

The singer was previously rushed to the hospital in September 2019 after complaining of shortness of breath. Lata Mangeshkar, who made her radio debut 80 years ago, recently turned to Twitter to commemorate the occasion. She's been dubbed the 'Nightingale of India,' and her songs have appeared in over 1,000 films across multiple languages. Among her many awards are three National Film Awards, the Dadasaheb Phalke Award, and the Bharat Ratna.
