Discovery of liquid water on Mars sparks new hope for life after NASA's insight lander findings

New data from NASA’s InSight Lander has revealed the possible existence of a large reservoir of liquid water deep beneath Mars' surface. While scientists have previously discovered frozen water at the planet's poles and evidence of water vapor in its atmosphere, this is the first time liquid water has been detected. This discovery is significant as it could help answer long-standing questions about what happened to Mars' water, which once existed in rivers and lakes but vanished as the planet lost its atmosphere.

Implications for Mars’ climate and habitability

The discovery of underground liquid water on Mars could provide crucial insights into the planet's climate history and its potential to support life. Similar to Earth, where much of the water exists underground, Mars might also have retained some of its water below the surface. The finding suggests that habitable environments could exist deep underground on Mars. The study, published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, used seismic waves recorded by the InSight Lander to detect the presence of water, a technique similar to those used on Earth for finding underground water, oil, and gas.
