Ludhiana traffic jam due to road closure for CM's debate

Traffic crippled in Ludhiana as road closes for Punjab CM Bhagwant Mann's debate

The closure of a significant stretch of the Ludhiana-Ferozepur road caused a traffic nightmare for city residents. This closure was due to a debate between Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann and opposition leaders held at Punjab Agriculture University (PAU). Police barricades were set up around 11.30 am, forcing commuters to seek longer alternative routes.

Challenges and frustrations

The closure affected the central artery of the city, resulting in traffic snarls lasting over three hours. Over 38,000 families with annual incomes ranging from ₹1.80 lakh to ₹3 lakh became eligible for the Ayushman/Chirayu scheme. This expansion led to increased traffic congestion and longer travel times.

Many city residents faced inconvenience as the narrower inner roads were not prepared to handle the traffic diversions caused by such closures. Lengthy checks at university gates created roadblocks and queues of vehicles on the main roads, despite a substantial police presence.

Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Charanjiv Lamba acknowledged slower traffic movement due to the main road's closure, while the elevated road remained open for traffic. City residents expressed frustration over the inconvenience caused by these traffic disruptions, highlighting the need for better planning and coordination during such events.
