Macron to open talks on French nuclear shield for Europe

Macron to discuss extending French nuclear protection to European allies

French President Emmanuel Macron said that France is open to discussing nuclear protection for its European allies. In a speech, he warned that Russia is a threat to France and the whole of Europe.

More defence spending

Macron said France must increase defence spending to stay strong. However, he assured that there would be no tax hikes. He also said that France will continue to support Ukraine despite global uncertainties.

France and Britain are the only two nuclear powers in Europe. Macron stressed that France has a strong nuclear deterrent with fighter jets and submarines. However, he made it clear that only the French president can decide on using nuclear weapons.

Macron said he hopes the U.S. will stay an ally, but Europe must be ready if that changes. His statement came after Donald Trump halted military aid to Ukraine, raising concerns among NATO allies.

Peace plan for Ukraine

France and Britain are working on a peace plan for Ukraine, which may be finalized soon. They want to bring the U.S. and Ukraine closer before talks in Washington. However, France’s budget issues could make increased defence spending difficult.
