Mahakumbh 2025: stampede at Sangam leaves 15 feared dead
Mahakumbh 2025 tragedy: Stampede at Sangam on Mauni Amavasya, 15 feared dead
A tragic stampede occurred at the Maha Kumbh Mela in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh, on January 29, 2025, during the holy Mauni Amavasya bathing ritual. Thousands of devotees had gathered for the Amrit Snan at the Triveni Sangam when the situation turned chaotic. At least 15 people are feared dead, and several others were injured. Ambulances quickly arrived, and the injured were taken to the central hospital inside the Mela grounds.
Due to the massive crowd pressure, the administration urged people to leave the ghats after taking their holy dip. Many devotees struggled to move, and some left without completing their ritual bath.
Akharas cancel Shahi Snan
In response to the stampede, several Akharas (religious groups) decided to cancel their sacred bathing ritual, also known as the Amrit Snan. Even though devotees continued to take dips in the river, the saints and seers from different Akharas chose to avoid further risks. Announcements were made through loudspeakers, asking people to vacate the area after their bath.

PM Modi reviews situation
Prime Minister Narendra Modi personally monitored the situation and spoke with Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath. He ordered immediate support for the victims and reviewed crowd management measures. Security had already been tightened for the event, as officials expected around 10 crore devotees on Mauni Amavasya alone.
To ensure safety, the government declared the Mela area a no-vehicle zone. AI-powered CCTV cameras and drones were deployed for surveillance. Over 1,000 medical professionals and 300 specialist doctors were stationed in the area to handle emergencies.
The Maha Kumbh Mela, held once every 12 years, began on January 13 and will conclude on Maha Shivaratri on February 26. The event has already seen a massive footfall of 15 crore pilgrims. Officials continue to urge people to remain calm and follow safety guidelines to prevent further mishaps.
