Love knows no borders: Greek woman marries Indian man at Mahakumbh Mela 2025

Penelope, a woman from Greece, married Siddharth, an Indian man, at the Mahakumbh Mela in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh. The couple chose this grand religious gathering for their wedding, seeking a spiritual and divine experience rather than a typical celebration. Penelope and Siddharth felt this setting reflected their values and offered a unique way to honor their union.

The wedding ceremony was led by Swami Yatindranand Giri, a Mahamandaleshwar of the Juna Akhara. He performed the traditional kanyadaan ritual alongside Penelope’s mother and other family members. Swami Giri explained that Penelope had embraced Sanatan Dharma years ago and became a devotee of Lord Shiva. Siddharth, a yoga practitioner and teacher spreading Indian traditions globally, also shared their deep connection to Indian spirituality.

The ceremony included traditional rituals like the agni phere (walking around the sacred fire), which added to the sacred nature of the event. Penelope expressed her joy, calling the experience “magical beyond words.” She said that being married in such a spiritual way was deeply meaningful to her.

Why they chose Mahakumbh

Penelope and Siddharth explained their decision to marry in Prayagraj. According to Siddharth, Mahakumbh was the most divine and authentic place for their wedding. “At this time, it feels like the universe’s spiritual energy is concentrated here,” he said.

Penelope shared how this unique experience allowed her to embrace a new culture while feeling an unexpected sense of familiarity. “It was my first time at an Indian wedding, and as the bride, everything felt new yet comforting,” she said.

The couple plans to stay at the Mahakumbh Mela until it ends. They are looking forward to taking a holy dip in the Ganga on January 29, an experience they both described as essential to their spiritual journey.
