Mamata Banerjee warns of 'Riots Plot' ahead of Diwali, calls for caution

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has asked police to increase security during upcoming festivals, like Diwali, Kali Puja, and Chhath Puja. She warned that some groups may try to cause unrest during these celebrations and called on police and the Special Task Force (STF) to use intelligence to prevent any incidents. Emphasizing safety, she reminded officers to stay vigilant and ensure peace, especially during large gatherings. Additionally, she appealed to the media to avoid sensational coverage that might stir public fear or provoke tensions.

"We must ensure no one disrupts the festive atmosphere to create trouble," Banerjee stated. She stressed that police would take strict action against anyone trying to incite issues and reminded the public to stay calm.

Cyclone Dana’s aftermath and relief efforts

Mamata Banerjee also addressed the state’s response to Cyclone Dana, which recently impacted West Bengal and neighboring Odisha. Despite significant disruptions, flights, trains, and buses quickly resumed, and local authorities worked swiftly to clear any obstacles. Tragically, one person died while handling cable work in South 24 Parganas. Banerjee offered state support to the family and assured relief supplies would reach affected areas.

Over 200,000 people were evacuated from low-lying areas ahead of the storm. Banerjee, who spent the night at the state secretariat to oversee cyclone relief, held a review meeting to ensure all necessary help reaches those affected, affirming her government’s dedication to both festival safety and recovery from the cyclone.
