Manipur violence escalates: Colleges closed, internet suspended on September 11-12

The ongoing unrest in Manipur has led to a series of severe measures by the local government. To ensure public safety and control the spread of misinformation, authorities have imposed a five-day internet suspension and curfews in three districts. This action comes amid continuous clashes between the Meitei and Kuki communities.

The Congress party has urged Union Home Minister Amit Shah to investigate claims involving illegal immigrants, foreign elements, and the drug mafia in the unrest. They are calling for decisive action by security forces to restore law and order.

Recent developments

The higher education department has ordered both government and private colleges to remain closed on September 11 and 12 due to the violence. The situation has escalated with drone and rocket attacks, prompting the state police to deploy anti-drone systems and acquire more equipment.

Recent violence in Jiribam district resulted in six deaths, including that of 63-year-old Yurembam Kulendra Singha, who was killed by suspected Kuki insurgents. Jiribam was also the site of peace talks between Meitei and Hmar leaders, who, along with security forces, committed to working towards peace.

On Friday, crowds attempted to loot weapons from the Manipur Rifles camps in Imphal, but were stopped by security forces using blank rounds and tear gas. In Thoubal district, a mob overpowered police, stole arms, and fired at officers.

Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma has expressed concerns over the violence and called for intervention from the Government of India. The Centre has responded by deploying two additional CRPF battalions, totaling about 2,000 personnel, to the region.

A total of 92 checkpoints have been established across various districts, and 129 individuals have been detained for violations. Since the clashes began, over 225 people have been killed and approximately 60,000 displaced.
