MC of Chandigarh has launched a home composting awareness campaign

On the 13th of February 2022, Councilor and Mayor Smt. Sarabjit Kaur Ji of Chandigarh’s Ward No. 6 congratulated the people of Chandigarh on Guru Ravidas ji’s birth anniversary and encouraged the public to compost wet waste and inspired the public to contribute and make compost from wet waste and towards the Muncipal Corporation.

Under the ongoing Make Manure at Home campaign, along with Municipal Corporation Chandigarh Inspector Davinder Rohilla,  Compost bins and  units have been distributed from house to house so that people could make organic manure at home from wet waste.

This campaign will help a lot in reducing the pile of garbage. Mayor Sarabjit Kaur urged everyone to work together to make Chandigarh the cleanest city in the country by 2022.

The municipal corporation launched a public awareness campaign on home composting and trash separation at the source on Tuesday to encourage citizens to adopt the “my waste, my duty” idea, which entails converting biodegradable garbage into manure.

The home composting campaign entails canvassing homeowners door to door to encourage them to install viable waste recycling options such as on-site composting pits and composting in buckets, among other things. Residents were also taught about environmentally friendly garbage recycling practises in their homes.

Mitra explained that instead of holding awareness meetings in confined rooms, the MC intends to visit citizens on the streets and encourage them to assist the civic body in containing daily waste and disposing of wet waste at home through home composting.

We held a Google form contest for all locals to promote home composting. Prizes ranged from Rs. 1 lakh to Rs. 2 lakh. Only 119 entries were received, which was a poor response. Now, as part of a pilot project, we’ve chosen 10 wards in which 200 homes will receive two composting buckets each. “A company has sponsored an amount of Rs8 lakh for the purpose as part of its CSR programme,” stated MC Commissioner Anindita Mitra.

Home composting is the process of using household waste to make compost at home. Composting is the biological decomposition of organic waste by recycling food and other organic materials into compost. Home composting can be practiced within households for various environmental advantages, such as increasing soil fertility, reduce landfill and methane contribution, and limit food waste.
