Meghalaya Government Initiates Education Commission to Transform Education Landscape

The government of Meghalaya has embarked on a significant endeavor to enhance the education sector by constituting a state education commission consisting of four members. Headed by Sherwin May Sungoh, who holds the position of the education department's head at North Eastern Hill University, the commission's primary objective is to propose transformative reforms and policy adjustments to foster high-quality education across schools, colleges, and higher and technical education institutions within the state.

The state education commission in Meghalaya consists of Sherwin May Sungoh, former UPSC Chairman David Reid Syiemlieh, former MBOSE Executive Chairman Tony TC Marak, and Education Secretary Ambrose Ch Marak as the member secretary. Additionally, the commission will benefit from the input of 12 co-opted members, ensuring a broad range of perspectives for their recommendations. With a duration of two years, the commission will have sufficient time to thoroughly evaluate the education sector and propose meaningful reforms that can make a positive impact on the educational landscape of Meghalaya.

DRIVING REFORMS IN EDUCATION

Aligned with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, the Education Commission in Meghalaya aims to propose tangible solutions, strategic interventions, and policy decisions. Its central focus revolves around implementing transformative reforms within the school and higher education system. Addressing crucial elements such as curriculum development, infrastructure, teacher training, and accountability measures, the commission seeks to bring about comprehensive changes in the education sector. By aligning its recommendations with the principles and goals of the NEP, the commission aims to ensure the advancement and enhancement of education in Meghalaya.

Alongside its role in proposing reforms, the Education Commission in Meghalaya holds the responsibility of advising the state government on critical matters concerning the school and college system. The commission will conduct a thorough assessment of the challenges prevalent in the education sector of Meghalaya, evaluating performance and financial aspects, and presenting viable solutions.

A key focus will be achieving salary parity for teachers across various aided categories, aligning them with government teachers. Through these efforts, the commission aims to bring about comprehensive improvements in the education system of Meghalaya.

Education Minister Rakkam A Sangma conveyed his utmost confidence in the Education Commission's capability to tackle the crucial challenges impacting education in Meghalaya.
