Maldives Environment Minister Fathima Shamnaz Ali Saleem and three others were arrested on charges of allegedly performing 'black magic' on President Mohamed Muizzu. Reports indicate that Shamnaz, along with her ex-husband Adam Rameez and two others, used witchcraft purportedly to influence Muizzu.
Legal proceedings and suspension
The incident came to light on June 23, leading to the arrest of the four accused who were subsequently remanded in custody for seven days. Shamnaz was suspended from her position as state minister at the Ministry of Environment following the allegations. The Maldives Chief Police spokesperson, Assistant Commissioner of Police Ahmed Shifan, confirmed that investigations are ongoing.

Previously, Shamnaz and Rameez served together with Muizzu on the Male City Council when he was the mayor. After Muizzu became President last year, Shamnaz resigned from the council and was appointed as a state minister at Muliaage, the president's official residence. Later, she was transferred to the Ministry of Environment. Rameez, known as a close aide to Muizzu, has been out of the public eye for the past five months.
Official statements and response
Neither the Maldives government nor the President's office has issued official statements regarding the case yet. Shamnaz, previously listed as a political appointee on the Ministry of Environment's website, has been moved to the list of 'former' political appointees.
The case has attracted significant attention in the Maldives, with local media closely following developments. The allegations of using black magic to influence a high-ranking government official have sparked discussions and debates within the country. Authorities continue to investigate the matter, aiming to determine the truth behind the allegations and ensure justice is served.
