Minor commits suicide after being forced to convert to Christianity

Minor commits suicide after being forced to convert to Christianity by a Christian conversion brigade.

In Tamil Nadu's Thanjavur district, a 17-year-old student died 10 days after ingesting pesticide. The girl said she was being 'tortured' by her hostel warden after she declined her 'conversion to Christianity proposition' two years ago in a video that went popular on social media.

The youngster, who came from the surrounding Ariyalur area, was residing at St Michael's Girl's Home in Thanjavur. Thanjavur district police, who are investigating the case, say they have received no complaints of 'forced conversion,' but they are looking into how and when the video was filmed. "We have not received any complaints of forced conversion in the initial round of investigation." "We have filed a case and are investigating her parents' complaint," Thanjavur District Superintendent of Police (SP) C. Ravali Priya Gandhapuneni told Deccan Herald. SP also threatened to take legal action against anyone who divulged the identity of the kid on social media.

Police have arrested Sagayamari, a 62-year-old hostel warden, on the basis of the filed allegation. She was charged under several sections of the IPC and the JJ Act. According to the Sources , the dead was seen claiming in a viral video clip that her hostel warden began 'torturing her' by demanding her to clean all rooms and complete other jobs. "Two years ago, she asked my parents if I might convert to Christianity and if she could cover my educational fees. Since then, she made me do all the labour," the girl stated in the video.

The incident was discovered after school officials contacted the minor's father, Muruganandam, on January 10 to inform him that their daughter had vomited and was experiencing significant stomach pain.

Taking note of the suicide, Tamil Nadu's opposition is calling for harsh action in the state's forced conversion cases. K Annamalai, the state BJP head, raked up the event in a statement, claiming that the FIR did not relate to the girl's statement on attempted 'forced conversion.'
