MP Santosh Kumar pushes for Kerala Flood Relief

CPI MP Santosh Kumar urges Kerala's inclusion in Budget Flood Relief Fund after Wayanad Landslides

CPI Rajya Sabha MP Sandosh Kumar has urged the Indian government to declare the landslides in Wayanad, Kerala, a ‘national disaster.’ The landslides, caused by heavy rains, have killed nearly 300 people and left many more injured, homeless, and missing. Villages like Mundakkai, Chooralmala, Attamala, and Noolpuzha have been severely affected.

Kumar emphasized that Kerala should be added to the list of states receiving disaster relief funds in the Union Budget. Currently, this list includes states like Bihar, Assam, Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, and Sikkim. Kumar argues that without Kerala, the list is incomplete, as the state frequently suffers from natural disasters.

Impact on Local Communities

The landslides have caused significant damage, including the destruction of the government higher secondary school in Chooralmala. This school was crucial in saving lives by acting as a barrier against the landslide. A student from the school had previously warned about potential disasters due to environmental issues, but fortunately, she is safe.

The Union Budget has allocated funds for flood management and disaster relief in several states. However, Kerala’s exclusion has raised concerns about whether the state will receive adequate support.

Kumar stressed the need for national solidarity and coordination in the relief efforts. Kerala's response has been strong, with support from neighboring states like Tamil Nadu. Moving forward, sustainable relocation of people from eco-sensitive zones will be challenging but necessary, requiring advanced technology and support from both the central and state governments.
