Kangana’s Emergency: Faridkot MP and Son of Indira’s Assassin Demands Movie Ban

Sarabjeet Singh Khalsa, an Independent MP from Faridkot and son of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi’s assassin Beant Singh, has demanded a ban on Kangana Ranaut’s upcoming movie *Emergency*. He claims that the film portrays Sikhs as separatists and terrorists, which could create hatred toward the community. The movie, directed by Kangana Ranaut, was initially set to release in June but is now scheduled for September 6, 2024. The trailer has sparked controversy among Sikh groups due to the portrayal of Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale, a key figure in the Khalistan movement.

Concerns over potential misinformation

Khalsa expressed concerns that the film could promote a negative image of Sikhs, stating that it might lead to communal tensions. He believes the film is part of a larger conspiracy to spread hatred and calls on the government to ban it to maintain peace. He also highlighted that while Sikhs have made significant sacrifices for the country, they are often misrepresented in films. Khalsa’s win in the Faridkot Lok Sabha by-elections earlier this year added attention to his views, further fueling the debate around the film’s release.

The controversy adds to the ongoing discussion around how sensitive historical events and communities are portrayed in cinema, especially when it involves deeply impactful incidents like the Emergency period.
