Musk launches DOGE to boost Government efficiency
Elon Musk unveils bold plans for the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) to streamline Bureaucracy
President-elect Donald Trump has announced a temporary agency aimed at making the federal government more efficient, called the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE). This agency will be led by tech billionaire Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla and SpaceX, and entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy. The main goals of DOGE are to reduce wasteful spending, remove excessive regulations, and reorganize federal agencies for better service to the public.
In a statement on November 12, 2024, Trump described this initiative as crucial for his administration’s “Save America” movement, which aims to cut unnecessary bureaucracy and help the government operate more smoothly. According to Trump, Musk and Ramaswamy will be responsible for taking on the challenge of identifying where resources are being misused in the federal system.
Elon Musk shared that he is committed to tackling the nation’s high debt and excessive budget. He also noted that some people who benefit from government spending may oppose these changes, but he believes they are necessary to prevent the country from “going bankrupt.” For Musk, reforming the government’s financial habits is critical, especially given the high interest payments on the national debt, which he emphasized have now exceeded the annual defense budget.

DOGE's plans for reform and greater public involvement
To keep the public informed, DOGE will publish updates about its activities online, including a “leaderboard” of unnecessary spending items Musk calls both “tragic and entertaining.” This initiative encourages the public to provide feedback, especially if they feel any cuts impact essential services or if more wasteful areas could be targeted.
DOGE will also focus on immediate cost-saving efforts. First, they will work to implement cost-cutting ideas from government oversight agencies, such as the Government Accountability Office (GAO), which could reportedly save over $200 billion. Additionally, Trump’s administration plans to propose a package of these recommendations to Congress to gain legislative support.
Other changes will include reviving the previous administration’s “one in, two out” rule on regulations, which means adding one regulation requires removing two others. Musk and his team will also use artificial intelligence (AI) to find more ways to reduce government waste, such as continuing the Department of Health and Human Services’ “Regulatory Clean-Up Initiative” launched in 2020. This initiative uses AI to identify outdated regulations that could be removed without affecting essential services.
Musk believes that making government spending more accountable is essential, saying, “All government spending is ultimately funded by taxpayers.” By cutting back on excess and improving transparency, he aims to make DOGE an effective part of the new administration’s efforts to improve public trust in government efficiency.
