The Nagaland Institute of Medical Sciences and Research (NIMSR), Nagaland's inaugural medical college, commenced its operations on a momentous Friday as it welcomed its first cohort of 100 students. This achievement marks the realization of a longstanding aspiration for the state, as it finally establishes its very own medical college. Chief Secretary J Alam, speaking at the induction ceremony held at the college's campus in Kohima's Phriebagie, emphasized the significance of this milestone, not only for the commencement of an academic session but as the fulfillment of a cherished dream.

Transformative journey in healthcare

Describing this moment as memorable for the entire state, Chief Secretary Alam expressed the belief that this marks the beginning of a transformative journey that will shape the future of healthcare in Nagaland. He noted that the establishment of this medical college is the result of collective aspiration and called upon the 45-member faculty to contribute to building an institution of excellence.

Addressing the students, Chief Secretary Alam stressed the importance of diligence and highlighted their future role in positively impacting countless lives and reducing healthcare disparities. He assured the government's unwavering support in developing NIMSR to be among the best in the country, underlining the state's commitment to healthcare excellence.

NIMSR's inaugural batch

NIMSR's dean-cum-director, Dr. Soumya Chakraborty, revealed that the first batch comprises 100 MBBS students, with 85 hailing from Nagaland and 15 from various other parts of the country. This diverse cohort reflects the college's commitment to providing medical education opportunities to both local and national students.

Welcoming the incoming students, Ritu Thurr, Principal Director of Health and Family Welfare, emphasized that success is not accidental but is the result of meticulous preparation, self-discipline, and sacrifices made along the way. She encouraged the students to embrace hard work, stating that it is the key to unlocking opportunities and creating their own luck.
