Tragic landslides in Nepal claim nine lives, including three children

Nepal has faced devastating consequences from heavy monsoon rains, leading to tragic landslides that have claimed at least nine lives, including three children. Across the country, the toll has risen to 35 fatalities due to landslides, floods, and lightning strikes since mid-June.

Impact in West Nepal

In Gulmi district, about 250 km west of Kathmandu, a landslide swept away the house of a family of five in Malika village while they were sleeping. This incident resulted in the deaths of all family members, including two children. In Syangja district, a woman and her three-year-old daughter lost their lives when another landslide destroyed their home. Similarly, in Baglung district, two individuals perished in yet another landslide.

The annual monsoon rains, which typically last until mid-September, bring severe challenges to Nepal, particularly its mountainous regions. Landslides and flash floods are frequent during this period, causing significant loss of life and property. The country witnesses hundreds of fatalities annually due to these natural disasters.

Efforts by authorities, such as the National Disaster Rescue and Reduction Management Authority, are crucial in managing and responding to such emergencies. Rescue operations have been ongoing to recover bodies and provide support to affected communities.

Continued risks and precautions

As the monsoon season progresses, Nepal remains vulnerable to further landslides, floods, and lightning strikes. Authorities continue to monitor weather patterns closely and have deployed resources, including the National Disaster Response Force, to areas at high risk.

The tragic events underscore the need for preparedness and proactive measures to mitigate the impact of natural disasters on vulnerable communities across Nepal.
