Nephew of CM Charanjit Channi has been detained for 14 days

In the illegal sand mining case, Punjab Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi’s nephew Bhupinder Singh Honey was convicted to 14 days in judicial custody on Friday, February 11.

In the illegal sand mining case, the Enforcement Directorate arrested Punjab Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi’s nephew, Bhupinder Singh Honey, on money laundering charges late on February 3.

As per the Enforcement Directorate, Bhupinder Singh Honey incorporated a company with others to launder crores of rupees he earned through illegal sand mining and other activists.

Honeys and others’ homes were searched by the ED last month in Punjab’s Mohali, Ludhiana, Rupnagar, Fatehgarh Sahib, and Pathankot.

After investigations by ED officers, over Rs 10 crore in cash was discovered, along with suspected incriminating documents related to a sand mining business, property transactions, mobile phones, gold worth Rs 21 lakh, and a Rolex watch for Rs 12 lakh.

Punjab’s opposition parties have accused the state administration of assisting those involved in illegal sand mining in the past. The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) stated in December 2021 that illegal sand mining was booming in Chamkaur Sahib, CM Channi’s own seat.

The Punjab Chief Minister, Charanjit Singh Channi, on the other hand, has claimed that the ED is working for the BJP, which the agency has rejected.
