Odisha to build 500 multi-purpose structures for enhanced disaster preparedness

Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi announced plans to construct 500 more multi-purpose buildings to help people during natural disasters in coastal areas. This decision comes as part of the state's ongoing efforts to improve disaster preparedness, especially following the memories of the devastating super cyclone in 1999 that killed over 10,000 people.

Improving emergency response

 Currently, Odisha has 844 cyclone shelters, up from just 21 in 1999. The government will also increase the number of teams in the Odisha Disaster Rapid Action Force to help with rescues. Additionally, new buildings will serve as schools, halls, and shelters during emergencies. The state aims to prepare more villages for tsunamis and establish a disaster management center in Bhubaneswar.
