Pakistan's Punjab province has announced plans to raise its national flag on a towering 500-foot flag mast, costing approximately PKR 40 crore, on August 14 to commemorate its 76th Independence Day. This ambitious project comes as Pakistan recently secured financial assistance from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) to address its struggling economy.
The cash-strapped Punjab province, which reportedly needs at least Rs 2,000 crore in the next two years to repay foreign loans with interest, will proudly raise the flag at Liberty Chowk in Lahore. In 2017, Pakistan achieved a significant milestone by unveiling a 400-foot tall flag, the tallest in South Asia, at the Attari-Wagah border. The flag, measuring 120x80 feet, held the distinction of being the largest in Pakistan's seven-decade history.

This decision by Pakistani authorities follows the recent approval of a $3 billion bailout package by the IMF to prevent Pakistan from defaulting on its debt repayments. The funds will be disbursed over a period of nine months to support the country's economic stabilization program. Furthermore, Pakistan received a boost to its reserves on July 12 when it obtained $1 billion from the UAE, followed by an additional $2 billion transfer from Saudi Arabia to the country's central bank.
Pakistan has been grappling with the challenges of its ailing economy, worsened by last year's devastating floods that claimed the lives of 1,739 people, destroyed 2 million homes, and caused $30 billion worth of damage.
