PDP Chief Mehbooba Mufti meets Congress President Sonia Gandhi in Delhi

Former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister and People’s Democratic Party/PDP Chief Mehbooba Mufti met Congress president Sonia Gandhi at her residence in Delhi on Monday evening. Mufti had nearly an hour-long meeting with the Congress Leader and refused to speak with the media after the end of the meeting.

According to sources close to the matter, it was a private meeting during which the two political leaders discussed the situation in Jammu and Kashmir and the country. The Jammu and Kashmir assembly elections are just around the corner. Considering this, there also exist speculations and rumors about how Congress might forge an alliance with the PDP instead of the National Conference for this election season.

Despite details about the meeting being discreet and not revealed to the media, the visit in itself presents the possibility of the People’s Democratic Party coming closer to Congress in the upcoming days. Sources have also claimed that some major activities can be expected in this regard very soon. The PDP leader has also said it is the Congress that has kept the country safe so far while alleging that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) wants to create more Pakistans.

Mufti became the chief minister of Jammu and Kashmir in the year 2016 with the support of the BJP, but the two fell apart, and the coalition government was unable to complete its tenure. Meanwhile, Sonia Gandhi also met with leading election strategist Prashant Kishor on 18th April. This was their second meeting in the last 3 days. The meeting comes in the backdrop of speculations that Prashant Kishor might join Congress soon. The election strategist is learned to have made a comment about how the Indian National Congress(INC) should focus on 370 Lok Sabha constituencies for the 2024 general elections.
