PM Modi promotes sports in education and inaugurates Varanasi stadium

Sports facilities beyond metropolises

Prime Minister Narendra Modi emphasized the importance of incorporating sports into school curriculam during the inauguration of an international cricket stadium in Varanasi, his Lok Sabha constituency. He noted that the National Education Policy, 2020, recognizes sports as an essential category, akin to traditional subjects.

In his address, Prime Minister Modi began in Bhojpuri and highlighted the evolving landscape of sports facilities. He observed that smaller towns and remote areas now boast sports infrastructure comparable to major cities like Delhi and Mumbai.

Economic boost for Eastern Uttar Pradesh

PM Modi hailed the new stadium as a potential boon for eastern Uttar Pradesh, benefiting both athletes and the regional economy. He expressed his privilege in visiting Varanasi, stating that the stadium, dedicated to Lord Shiva, will serve as a blessing for sportspersons across Purvanchal (eastern Uttar Pradesh).

The stadium, set for completion by December 2025, will feature floodlights resembling a trident and a structure resembling a damaru (two-headed drum). The Uttar Pradesh government acquired 31 acres of land at a cost of ₹121 crore, while the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is expected to invest ₹330 crore in its construction. With a seating capacity of 30,000 and seven pitches, the gallery will resemble the steps of the Ganga Ghat.
