India's Ambassador to the US, Vinay Kwatra, shared an interesting story about a conversation between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and then-US President Barack Obama in 2014. As the two leaders were on their way to visit the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial, they began talking about their families. During the drive in Obama's large stretch limousine, Modi made a lighthearted comment. He said to Obama, “You might not believe this, but the size of your car is almost the size of my mother’s house.”
Kwatra, who was present as a translator, recalled how Obama was surprised by the remark. This small, candid comment gave Obama a glimpse into Modi’s humble background. Modi’s mother lived in a modest house in Gujarat at the time. This conversation helped the two leaders bond on a personal level, as both came from simple beginnings before reaching the highest offices in their respective countries.

A Deeper Connection
Modi's ability to connect with world leaders, including US presidents, is often highlighted by officials. His straightforward and relatable approach, rooted in his life experiences, allows him to form meaningful relationships with global figures. Modi’s first visit to the US as prime minister in 2014 was an important step in strengthening India-US relations.
Kwatra’s account, shared on the ‘Modi Story’ social media handle, shows how this simple exchange helped Obama and Modi connect on a deeper level. Both leaders rose from humble beginnings, and this moment reflected their shared understanding of the challenges they faced. Modi’s unique ability to relate to others, even on a personal level, has played a role in his strong relationships with leaders across the world.
