PM Modi to lay foundation for Sikkim's first Railway Station

Prime Minister Modi to inaugurate Sikkim's maiden Railway Station, boosting connectivity

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to lay the foundation stone for Sikkim's inaugural railway station, Rangpo Station, marking a significant milestone in the state's transportation history. This project represents the third mode of transportation for Sikkim's residents, who have relied solely on roads and air travel until now.

Initially slated for completion by 2024, the project faced delays due to unforeseen challenges such as floods and landslides, pushing the deadline to 2025. Despite setbacks, progress continues on Sikkim's first railway project, with ongoing construction highlighted in a video shared by news agency ANI.

Key features of the Project

The Sivok-Rangpo railway project, encompassing a total length of 44.96 km, features several noteworthy aspects. Notably, 86% of the length comprises tunnels, with the latest NATM technique employed for tunnelling. The project will include five stations, with one underground halt station at Teesta Bazar, making it India's first underground railway station in broad gauge.

Significance of Teesta Bazar Station

The underground Teesta Bazar station holds particular significance, serving as a vital link between Darjeeling and Gangtok. With a platform length of 620 meters, capable of accommodating full-length trains, and six excess tunnels for emergency evacuation, this station promises enhanced convenience for passengers traveling between the two popular destinations.
