President Murmu: delays in justice administration erode public trust

President Droupadi Murmu expressed serious concern about delays in the Indian judicial system, particularly for severe crimes like sexual assault. Speaking at the National Conference of District Judiciary in New Delhi, she highlighted how these delays erode public trust and make people feel that the system lacks sensitivity.

Addressing judicial delays

Murmu criticized the frequent adjournments in court cases, referring to the “tariq pe tariq” (date after date) culture. She emphasized that such delays, which can stretch cases over decades, undermine the effectiveness of the justice system and create hardships for ordinary citizens, especially those from rural areas.

She also pointed out that some criminals continue to act freely due to the slow pace of justice. Murmu stressed the need for judges to administer justice with compassion and efficiency. She called for a focus on eliminating the backlog of cases, which she described as a serious issue.

Focus on vulnerable groups

Murmu also highlighted the specific needs of vulnerable groups. She urged better care for children of incarcerated women, stressing their health and education. For juvenile delinquents, she advocated for a rehabilitative approach, including mental health support and skill development.

The President praised the increase in the number of women judicial officers and expressed hope that their presence would help improve the judiciary’s approach. She ended on a hopeful note, praising the Supreme Court's decision to improve criminal justice processes, which she believes will lead to a more effective and fair judicial system.
