President Murmu takes holy dip at Sangam, calls it a symbol of India's Heritage
President Droupadi Murmu took a holy dip at Triveni Sangam on Monday, where she praised the Maha Kumbh festival as a strong symbol of India’s culture and unity. She also prayed for peace and happiness for all.
Rituals and prayers at Sangam
Before stepping into the sacred waters, President Murmu offered flowers and a coconut to the holy rivers. She also performed ‘arghya’ to Lord Surya, a Hindu ritual where water is offered to the Sun God. As she entered the water, Vedic chants filled the air, creating a divine atmosphere. She took multiple dips in the confluence of the Ganga, Yamuna, and Saraswati rivers, expressing deep devotion.
She was accompanied by Uttar Pradesh Governor Anandiben Patel and Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath. After completing her holy bath, she performed ‘aarti’ at the confluence, a ritual involving lamps and prayers dedicated to the rivers. A Tirtha Purohit (a priest serving at pilgrimage sites) tied a ‘kalawa’ (a sacred red thread) on her wrist as a mark of blessing.
Following the rituals, President Murmu visited the Akshayvat tree and the Bade Hanuman temple, both considered highly sacred in Hindu beliefs.

She described Maha Kumbh as a symbol of unity and spirituality, bringing people together in faith and devotion. She prayed that Maa Ganga continues to bless everyone with peace and happiness.
Later, she visited the Yamuna Complex in Sector 3 of Tent City and the Digital Experience Centre, where she learned about the Maha Kumbh Mela’s history and significance. Afterward, she returned to Prayagraj airport and departed for Delhi.
During her journey, she also fed migratory birds while traveling by cruise to the Sangam. Governor Anandiben Patel and CM Yogi Adityanath gave her a warm welcome upon arrival in Prayagraj, ensuring her visit was smooth and meaningful.
The Maha Kumbh Mela is a grand religious gathering that attracts millions of devotees from across India and beyond. It is considered the largest peaceful gathering of people in the world, with deep cultural and spiritual importance.
