Privatization of pothole filling: Chandigarh's Innovative Approach to Road Repairs

Chandigarh, known for its well-planned urban infrastructure, has taken a unique step by privatizing the task of filling potholes and road patches. A private firm has been awarded a contract worth Rs 65.27 lakh to undertake this responsibility for a duration of four months, focusing on Division 3.

Utilizing innovative techniques

The Chandigarh Municipal Corporation issued a tender specifying that the repair of road surfaces, specifically targeting potholes and patches, should be executed using ready-mix bituminous cold material on various roads within Division 3. The project is set to continue until December 2023.

Transparent and systematic approach

Chief Engineer of the Municipal Corporation, N P Sharma, highlighted the advantages of this approach. A pilot project in one division served as a testing ground, demonstrating transparency and methodical procedures in pothole filling. The hired agency employs proper rolling techniques and systematizes the entire patchwork process to ensure effective pothole repair.

Inspired by Gurgaon's success

The concept of privatizing pothole repair was inspired by Gurgaon, where a similar approach has been effective. Chandigarh's municipal authorities recognized the benefits of this method and decided to extend it to other divisions, facilitating more efficient road maintenance.

Cost considerations

When questioned about the possibility of road recarpeting, officials emphasized that this option requires substantial financial resources. In contrast, the privatization of pothole filling offers a cost-effective solution to address immediate road surface issues. Chandigarh's innovative approach to road maintenance not only improves efficiency but also enhances accountability and transparency in pothole repair, ensuring that residents benefit from smoother and safer roadways.
