Rain and cold wave predicted in North India: IMD

IMD predicts rain in Punjab, Haryana, and Delhi-NCR; cold wave from December 9

A western disturbance over central Pakistan and nearby regions is expected to bring light rain to Punjab, Haryana, and Delhi-NCR, as per the India Meteorological Department (IMD). The rain is likely over the next two days, followed by a significant drop in temperature. Naresh Kumar, an IMD scientist, mentioned that this weather system would also cause light to moderate rainfall in the Himalayas during this period.

The rain might temporarily raise temperatures in Punjab, Haryana, and Delhi-NCR on December 8-9. However, starting December 9, temperatures will likely decrease, ushering in a cold wave. This pattern will begin in Rajasthan and gradually spread to Punjab and Haryana by December 11.

Cold wave and poor air quality

The IMD has predicted that from December 9 to 14, cold wave conditions will intensify in West Rajasthan. Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, and West Uttar Pradesh are expected to experience a similar situation starting December 11. A "cold wave" is defined as a significant temperature drop below the regional average, making it noticeably colder.

Delhi residents are already feeling the effects of the changing weather. Several night shelters have been set up across the city, including areas near AIIMS, Lodhi Road, and the Nizamuddin flyover, to provide relief to those struggling with the cold. At the same time, Delhi's air quality has deteriorated, with the Air Quality Index (AQI) reaching the "very poor" category. On Sunday, the AQI was recorded at 302, indicating harmful levels of air pollution.

Despite some relaxation in GRAP-IV restrictions by the Supreme Court, GRAP stages I and II remain in place across Delhi-NCR to manage air quality. Authorities continue to monitor the situation, balancing the challenges of falling temperatures and worsening pollution. Residents are advised to take precautions against both the cold and air pollution.
