Rahul Gandhi poses singular query following meeting with wrestlers amid WFI controversy

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi made an unexpected visit to the Virender Arya Akhara in Haryana's Jhajjar district, where he met with renowned wrestlers, including Olympic bronze medallist Bajrang Punia. The visit came amidst the ongoing controversy surrounding the wrestling federation, adding a political dimension to the athletes' struggle.

Gandhi's concern for wrestlers' rights

Sharing pictures on social media, Gandhi emphasized the sacrifices athletes make for the country and questioned why these athletes, whom he referred to as "daughters of India," have to fight for their rights off the mat. He expressed support for the wrestlers who had been protesting for five months at Jantar Mantar, accusing the former wrestling federation chief of sexual exploitation.

During his impromptu visit, Gandhi observed the daily routine of the wrestlers and even engaged in exercises with them. Bajrang Punia praised Gandhi's understanding of wrestling techniques and appreciated the politician's interest in their sport.

Athletes' protest and resignations

The wrestlers, including Bajrang Punia, had been protesting against the election of Sanjay Singh, a close associate of the former wrestling federation chief, as the new president. Punia, in solidarity with the cause, returned his Padma Shri, while Sakshi Malik announced her retirement after the controversial election. Vinesh Phogat, a prominent wrestler, expressed her dissatisfaction by deciding to return her Khel Ratna and Arjuna awards, citing the struggle for justice within the wrestling community. The athletes' actions highlight the challenges faced by Indian wrestlers and their call for a fair administration in the Wrestling Federation of India.
