In a significant move, Ramkumar Ramanathan has been selected to lead the five-member Indian squad for the upcoming Davis Cup clash against Pakistan on grass courts. This decision marks India's return to Pakistan for the first time in 60 years, with the last visit dating back to 1964 when India triumphed 4-0. Notably, India has never lost to Pakistan in their eight Davis Cup encounters.
Challenges and selections for the clash
The All India Tennis Association (AITA) named the squad for the World Group I play-off tie scheduled for February 3-4. Ramkumar, known for his serve-and-volley game, will lead the team, comprising N Sriram Balaji, Yuki Bhambri, Niki Poonacha, and Saketh Myneni. The squad consists of two singles players, including the 2019 national champion, and three doubles specialists from the ATP Tour.
AITA is currently awaiting a decision from the International Tennis Federation (ITF) tribunal regarding their appeal against playing in Pakistan due to security concerns. Despite the appeal, the team announcement signals preparedness for the potential visit. AITA Secretary General Anil Dhupar mentioned that if the tribunal rejects the appeal, the team will travel to Pakistan.
Historical context and opposition stand
India's previous request to relocate the tie to a neutral venue was rejected by the ITF Davis Cup Committee. The clash in 2019 was moved to Kazakhstan at AITA's request, resulting in a 4-0 victory for India. Notably, Pakistan has indicated that it will not participate if the ITF decides to shift the tie to a neutral venue again. The final decision rests with the ITF tribunal on December 19.
