Red alert: IMD warns of heavy rain in Maharashtra, Goa, and Kerala; Schools shut

IMD issues red alert for Maharashtra, Goa, and Kerala due to heavy rainfall; Schools closed

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued significant alerts for multiple states, including Maharashtra, Kerala, Karnataka, and Goa, due to the intensifying monsoon. Heavy rainfall and thunderstorms are forecasted to hit these regions in the upcoming days. Red alerts have been issued for Mumbai suburbs in Maharashtra, as well as for Malappuram, Kannur, and Kasaragod districts in Kerala, signaling the likelihood of severe weather conditions.

School closures and precautions

In response to the IMD's red alerts, precautionary measures have been implemented. Schools up to Class 12 in Goa and six districts of Kerala will remain closed on Monday, July 15. This decision aims to ensure the safety of students and staff amid the expected heavy rain and thunderstorms.

According to the IMD's latest weather update, coastal regions of Kerala, Karnataka, and Konkan Goa are expected to receive over 20 cm of rainfall in the coming days. In Maharashtra, districts such as Satara, Kolhapur, Sindhudurg, and Ratnagiri have also been placed under a red alert due to heavy showers. Additionally, yellow and orange alerts have been issued for Mumbai, Palghar, Thane, Raigad, and Pune, indicating varying degrees of precautionary measures needed against potential waterlogging and other rain-related issues.

Local impacts and resilience

In Mumbai, persistent rainfall has already led to waterlogging in suburban areas. The city is under a yellow alert, urging residents to remain cautious as moderate to heavy rains continue. Meanwhile, Delhi NCR is expected to experience light rain and moderate winds in the coming days, providing relief from the July heat without posing significant weather risks.

As the monsoon progresses, IMD scientists emphasize the downward shift of the weather system, intensifying rainfall in coastal regions. While states like Maharashtra and Kerala brace for severe weather conditions, Delhi NCR anticipates lighter showers. Local authorities and residents are advised to stay updated with weather advisories and take necessary precautions to mitigate any potential risks associated with heavy rainfall and thunderstorms.
