Sarma: no child marriages in Assam on my watch

Himanta Biswa Sarma vows to prohibit child marriages in Assam throughout his lifetime

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma reaffirmed his commitment to eradicating child marriages in the state, rejecting criticism of his government's decision to repeal the Muslim Marriage and Divorce Act of 1935. Sarma emphasized that he wouldn't tolerate child marriages during his tenure.

The decision to repeal the Act faced opposition from parties like the All-India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) and the Congress. They proposed amending the law instead of scrapping it entirely to prevent child marriages while avoiding potential harassment of people with new legislation.

Criticism and walkouts

Congress members walked out of the House, and AIUDF MLAs protested after their demand for an adjournment motion was rejected by the speaker. They argued that amending specific sections of the existing law would have been more logical and effective.

The Assam government defended its decision, citing the misuse of the current law to register marriages of underage boys and girls. Tourism Minister Jayanta Malla Baruah stated that repealing the outdated Act was necessary to align with modern societal norms and move towards a Uniform Civil Code.

Campaign against Child Marriages

The BJP-led coalition government in Assam has been actively combating child marriages, with several arrests made last year, particularly within the Muslim community. The repeal of the 1935 Act is viewed as a significant step in curbing this practice and promoting social welfare.
