Sheetal Devi, Rakesh Kumar win India's first historic Bronze
Sheetal Devi and Rakesh Kumar make history with Bronze Medal, securing India's first-ever win
Sheetal Devi and Rakesh Kumar made history at the 2024 Paris Paralympics by winning a bronze medal in the mixed team compound archery event. This victory marks India's first-ever Paralympic medal in compound archery and only the second archery medal in the country's Paralympic history. The duo achieved this historic feat by defeating Italy's Eleonora Sarti and Matteo Bonacina in a thrilling match with a close score of 156-155.
Heartbreak and triumph
Earlier, the duo faced a tough semi-final loss to Iran, which was decided by two shootouts. Both teams shot perfect 10s, but Iran advanced because their arrows were closer to the target's center. Despite the setback, Sheetal and Rakesh displayed remarkable resilience in the bronze medal match, securing their place in the history books.
At just 17 years old, Sheetal Devi has become a global sensation as the world's only active female armless para-archer. Her inspiring journey continues to capture the hearts of many, especially after her earlier disappointment in the women's individual compound event.

Rakesh Kumar, 39, is no stranger to success. A World Champion in 2023, he also won three medals, including one gold, at the Para Asian Games last year. Although he narrowly missed a bronze medal in the men's individual event in Paris, his determination and skill shone through in the mixed team event alongside Sheetal.
This victory is a testament to their hard work and dedication, and it paves the way for future Indian athletes in Paralympic archery.
