Kuwait names Sheikh Meshal Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah as new Emir: A new era begins

Kuwait's Crown Prince Sheikh Meshal Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah has been named the new Emir of the state, succeeding the late Sheikh Nawaf Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah, who passed away at the age of 86. The announcement was made by Issa Al-Kandari, deputy prime minister and minister of state for cabinet affairs.

About the New Emir:

Crown Prince Sheikh Meshal Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah, aged 83, has been the de facto ruler of Kuwait since 2021, gradually assuming duties from Sheikh Nawaf due to the latter's declining health. As per Kuwait's constitution, the crown prince automatically ascends to the position of emir and can formally take office after swearing an oath in parliament. The new emir has up to a year to appoint an heir.

Reactions to Sheikh Nawaf Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah's passing:

British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak expressed sorrow over Sheikh Nawaf's passing, describing him as a great friend of the United Kingdom. Sunak offered his deepest condolences to the Kuwaiti people and the Al Sabah family.

Emirati President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed shared his condolences on X, acknowledging Sheikh Nawaf's wisdom and leadership role in strengthening UAE-Kuwait relations. He expressed heartfelt sympathy to the Al-Sabah family and the Kuwaiti people during this difficult time.
