Sidhu has not been among people in last five years: Congress MP

On Sunday, Congress MP Gurjeet Singh Aujla claimed that Navjot Singh Sidhu, the party's chairman in Punjab, has not been seen in the last five years and that his use of harsh language against leaders has enraged people, putting his chances of winning the assembly elections in jeopardy.

"There is displeasure amongst people towards Sidhu. Being a national leader, in the last five years, he has given less time to them. Moreover, people have also disliked his way of speaking. It is likely to bring him harm," the Congress MP said.

Mr. Sidhu has used rude language in public forums, according to Mr. Aujla, who has been vocal on a number of state issues such as drugs and sacrilege incidents.

Mr. Aujla said, "Sidhu is a big leader. A lot of people look up to him and follow him. He should not use objectionable language against leaders including those of the opposition parties. A big leader should be disciplined in his speech because he has to lead the state and the country."

Despite the fact that Mr. Sidhu is a star campaigner, Punjab Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi had to take over campaigning on his assembly seat to vouch for him, according to him.

Mr. Sidhu will face former state minister and senior Shiromani Akali Dal politician Bikram Singh Majithia, who is the brother-in-law of Akali Dal chief Sukhbir Singh Badal, in a pivotal struggle in Amritsar (East). Jeeven Jyot Kaur of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) ran for the seat.

Mr. Aujla, speaking on the election, said the Amritsar East assembly seat is a "triangular" political battle. "With the mobilisation by the AAP and Akali Dal on the Amritsar East seat, there is a triangular battle," he remarked, referring to the AAP and Akali Dal mobilization.

For all sides, the uniqueness of Amritsar is extremely valuable.
