India's star wrestlers, Vinesh Phogat and Bajrang Punia, have broken their silence on the criticism they received for accepting exemption from the trials for the Asian Games in Hangzhou. In a joint live session on Facebook, the wrestlers responded to the accusations made by wrestler Antim Panghal regarding their direct entry into the squad without participating in trials.

Vinesh Phogat clarified that they are not against trials and emphasized that they respect Antim's stance. She acknowledged that the young wrestler is fighting for her rights, just as they are fighting for theirs. Vinesh expressed that while they understand Antim's perspective, they firmly believe that they have earned the right to be exempted.

Vinesh Phogat highlighted the significance of wrestlers expressing their views and seeking fairness in the selection process. She appreciated the courage shown by young wrestlers in speaking up and believed that it would be beneficial for the sport of wrestling.

Bajrang Punia came forward to support Vinesh Phogat and dismissed the doubts raised about her capabilities. He asserted that Vinesh has never lost a match and remains unbeatable against the wrestlers challenging her. Bajrang's statement aimed to reassure that Vinesh's prowess is beyond question.

IOA's Stand on Exemption

The Indian Olympic Association (IOA) ad-hoc committee member, Bhupender Singh Bajwa, defended the decision to grant exemption to Vinesh Phogat and Bajrang Punia from the Asian Games selection trials. He clarified that such exemptions are in line with the IOA's policies, which aim to protect top players from injuries and maintain their competitive edge.
