Ludhiana Athletes shine as they share inspiring journeys from State Special Olympics

The Punjab State and North Zone Special Olympic Games are currently being held, showcasing remarkable talent and resilience. These games are a celebration of athletes overcoming challenges, proving that disabilities do not limit achievements. First-time participants shared inspiring journeys, emphasizing determination and hard work.

Ramanpreet Kaur wins gold

Ramanpreet Kaur, a 16-year-old from Sunam in Punjab’s Sangrur, won the gold medal in the 50m sprint. Diagnosed with a 50% mental disability, Ramanpreet trains daily without a professional coach. Her mother, Kulwinder Kaur, a sewing instructor at an Industrial Training Institute (ITI), supports her training. Kulwinder shared, “People criticize me for encouraging her, but I want her to be independent and proud of her achievements.” Ramanpreet, a Class 11 student, dreams of a bright future, showcasing the power of perseverance.

Abhishek Arora, a 31-year-old teacher and actor from Ludhiana, made an impressive debut. He competed in the 200m race and performed a spirited dance during the opening ceremony. Diagnosed with an intellectual disability, Abhishek holds a bachelor’s degree in performing arts and has acted in three films. He also teaches special children and dreams of opening an acting school for kids with disabilities, providing them opportunities to grow as artists.

Lakhan Sain shines in Shot Put

Lakhan Sain, a 16-year-old from Rajasthan, won gold in the shot put event. Despite being discouraged by his father, Lakhan’s potential was nurtured by his coach, Uma Shankar Sharma. Lakhan practices yoga and meditation to boost his confidence. Earlier, he had won the Rajasthan State Championship, showcasing his commitment to success.

Lakhan’s teammate, 16-year-old cyclist Rahul Gurjar, competed despite a hearing disability. Their bond grew as Lakhan learned sign language to communicate with Rahul, highlighting the strength of friendship and teamwork.

Day two of the games featured competitions in shot put and the 25m dash. Sunny Kumar from JSS Asha Kiran Hoshiarpur won gold in shot put (male), while Gurnoor Singh from Ek Prayaas Ludhiana took first place in the 25m dash. Athletes from Himachal Pradesh, Faridkot, and Jalandhar also excelled, leaving behind stories of resilience and inspiration.

The games, which started on Friday, will conclude on Sunday, leaving a lasting legacy of courage and determination. These athletes remind us that with support and belief, barriers can be overcome, and dreams achieved.
