Sumit Antil: inspired by Neeraj Chopra, aims to leave a golden mark in Javelin
Para athlete Sumit Antil made history by clinching India's first gold in men's javelin throw F64 at the Asian Para Games 2023 in Hangzhou, China. His impressive throw of 73.29m not only secured a remarkable victory but also broke his previous world record of 70.83m set at the World Para Athletics Championships in Paris earlier this year.
Inspired to shine for India
Antil revealed that his inspiration for this remarkable feat came from fellow athlete Neeraj Chopra, who won gold at the Asian Games. He wanted to leave a golden mark in javelin for his country, and his hard work paid off with the historic win. The Indian contingent at the Asian Para Games won a total of 111 medals, surpassing the 107 medals won at the Asian Games, filling everyone with immense pride.
Aiming for future success
Antil, who is an alumnus of Delhi University's Ramjas College, credited his coaches for his success and mentioned the support and motivation he received from them. Looking ahead, the para athlete expressed his aspirations to do even better in the 2024 Paralympics. The sight of India's name in the top three countries at the Para Games was a source of elation and motivation for him and his fellow athletes, inspiring them to aim for greater achievements in the future.
