The Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha will be adjourned for an hour

According to sources, the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha will be postponed for an hour on Monday as a gesture of respect for iconic vocalist Lata Mangeshkar after members of both houses of Parliament pay tribute to her.

The Rajya Sabha will be adjourned for an hour after Chairman M Venkaiah Naidu reads Mangeshkar’s obituary when the House meets for the day at 10 a.m. on Monday, according to officials.

Speaker Om Birla will read Mangeshkar’s obituary and defer the proceedings for an hour in the Lok Sabha shortly after the House gathers at 4 p.m., according to reports.

At the age of 92, the iconic singer died in a Mumbai hospital on Sunday morning.

In January, she was admitted to the hospital after contracting COVID-19.

The motion of thanks on the president’s address is being debated in both chambers of Parliament, and Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to respond in the Lok Sabha on Monday and the Rajya Sabha on Tuesday.

In her seven-decade career, she sung around 25,000 songs, according to Mr. Naidu. He claimed that she nailed every mood, time, and travel of the country via her music. Lata Mangeshkar’s vocal prowess, he observed, was as diverse as our country.

Lata Mangeshkar, a nominated member of the Rajya Sabha, was a vocal supporter of the Prevention of Terrorism Bill, which was passed in a rare joint session of Parliament in 2002. Mangeshkar was nominated to the Upper House of Parliament in November 1999 and served till November 21, 2005, when she passed away.

She rarely attended Rajya Sabha sessions, believing herself to be an outcast in Parliament.

However, when the Rajya Sabha began voting on the Prevention of Terrorism Bill to replace the Prevention of Terrorism Ordinance on March 21, 2002, then-Parliamentary Affairs Minister Pramod Mahajan ensured that the maximum number of MPs were present.

The bill was lost because the then-NDA administration, led by Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, did not have a majority in the Upper House, with 98 members voting in favour and 113 voting against it

On March 26, 2002, a combined session of the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha convened in the Central Hall of Parliament, when the Prevention of Terrorism Bill was enacted with 425 votes in favour and 296 votes against.

Mangeshkar voted on both occasions, according to records, in the Rajya Sabha on March 21 and the joint session of both Houses of Parliament on March 26.

Mangeshkar’s involvement with Parliament was not confined to her time in the Rajya Sabha. She also took part in the 50th anniversary celebrations of the country’s independence at Parliament’s Central Hall.

At the midnight session of Parliament on August 14-15, 1997, Mangeshkar’s rendition of “Saare Jahan se Achha” and Pandit Bhimsen Joshi’s exposition of “Vande Mataram” had mesmerised the legislators.
